I was invited to photograph a grant signing ceremony at the House of European Union in Vienna as part of a wider assignment documenting European institutional events.
Although the ceremony itself was a short one-hour assignment, it was an important moment that required careful attention to timing, details, and discretion. My task was to create a complete visual record of the occasion — from the arrival of participants and official remarks to the signing of the agreement, portraits of the speakers, and the interactions around the ceremony.
The event brought together European representatives, officials, organisers, and members of the press who were there to document the announcement. With journalists and media teams present, the focus was naturally on the official signing moment, while my role was to capture both the formal aspects of the event and the human interactions that surrounded it.
Working in an environment where video recording was taking place throughout the ceremony meant that staying discreet was essential. I needed to move efficiently, anticipate important moments, and capture natural expressions without interrupting the proceedings. The relatively intimate size of the room allowed me to work close to the speakers while still maintaining a respectful distance.
The venue itself provided excellent conditions for photography. The glass ceiling brought in beautiful natural light, and the continuous lighting set up by the video team helped me create clean portraits and consistent images throughout the event. These conditions allowed me to focus on what mattered most — the people, the atmosphere, and the significance of the occasion.
For this assignment, I mainly worked with a zoom lens, which gave me the flexibility to quickly respond to changing moments while remaining unobtrusive. In formal institutional settings, being able to adapt without drawing attention is just as important as technical preparation.
This grant signing was part of a broader European Commission assignment in Vienna. Following this ceremony, I spent three days photographing a European Commission conference at Palais Niederösterreich, where delegates from across Europe gathered to discuss combating anti-Semitism. As the conference itself was held under Chatham House rules, I am only able to share this public part of the assignment.
