Photography Workshops in Vienna — Spring 2026

In Spring 2026 I’ll be organising a small series of photography workshops in Vienna, focused on building strong foundations, developing visual awareness, and learning to photograph with intention.

I designed the workshops to cover the full learning curve from understanding camera settings and exposure, through working consciously with light and composition, to creating meaningful photographic stories instead of isolated images. Yet you can join any of the workshops dedicated to a specific topic depending on your skill level and point of interest.

All Spring 2026 photography workshops will take place in Vienna, run for approximately 4–5 hours, and include hands-on exercises, guided shooting, and discussion. The emphasis is on learning how to see, make decisions, and understand why an image works.

Exact dates, topics, and booking details are listed below.
Places are limited and prepayment is required to secure a spot.

Beginner Photography Workshop

Photography tutorials and exercises by Fedor Vasilev

This workshop is created for early-stage photographers and people who are just starting out.
It’s designed as a kickstart to your photography journey, helping you build solid foundations early on so you don’t hit a creative plateau after learning only classic rules of photography.

The workshop is beginner-friendly and assumes no deep technical knowledge. At the same time starting with basics, we will be building foundation that will help you become even better than some of the professionals.

We’ll start with the fundamentals of exposure and camera control, then move into composition and subject-focused photography. The goal is not just to know how to set your camera, but to understand why you make certain choices and how they support the image.

Many beginners shoot from where they stand, reacting to scenes instead of observing them. This workshop helps you slow down, move with intention, and decide what the photograph is actually about before pressing the shutter.

What this workshop focuses on
  • Camera basics & exposure
How your camera sensor works, what exposure really is, and how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO affect the image.
We’ll also talk about why underexposing slightly is often a deliberate choice.
  • Composition fundamentals
Classic compositional rules, how to apply them simply, and how to avoid forcing them into every image.
  • Finding the subject
Learning to recognise what the photo is about — even in complex or messy scenes.
  • Subject-focused photography
How to move, change perspective, how to know what actually you photograph and how to do it.
  • Subject separation
Using depth, light, contrast, and framing to make the subject stand out.
  • Seeing before shooting
Developing the habit of observing becoming more aware and more deliberate with your photography choice.

This workshop is for you if…

  • you’re new to photography or still unsure about camera settings
  • you want a strong foundation for visual arts.
  • you feel your photos lack focus or intention
  • you want to avoid common beginner mistakes early on

This workshop is not for you if…

  • you’re already confident with exposure and subject-driven images
  • you’re mainly looking for advanced lighting or post-processing techniques
  • you want quick tricks instead of understanding photography.

Learning photography is like learning a language I do not teach you how to order/photograph a coffee cup but give you understanding how to shoot/say anything, yet learning is a longer process and you will need more practice later to master it.

With this course I will give you a strong base and it prepares you for the Light and Storytelling workshops later on. Get in touch to book this workshop and secure your spot.

Light, Seeing & Composition

Light is the subject. Everything else supports it.

Extended Photography Workshop

Date: Saturday, 14 March (14.03.2026)
Start: 16:00
Duration: approx. 4 hours
Location: Vienna (exact meeting point shared after booking)

Wedding photoshoot at a Villa in Austria a couple in a hotel room

This workshop is built around the transition from daylight to night.
We’ll work with natural light first and then move into controlled artificial light, allowing you to experience how different light sources shape mood, contrast, and meaning.

This workshop is focused on light — how to recognise it, shape it, and use it intentionally.
In the first part, we’ll work with natural light, contrast, direction, and colour, and how these elements influence mood and meaning in a photograph. The second half will be dedicated to working with artificial light, as that helps even further to understand how to work with light.

During the workshop I keep the focus on perception: learning to notice light before you lift the camera, and understanding how composition supports it.
You’ll learn how to simplify scenes, work with shadows, and make conscious choices rather than reacting to what’s in front of you.

The workshop is crucial as even professionals often do not use light to the full potential and I’ve seen many times when people working as photographers are forgetting about the most fundamental and complex part of it – light! Photo is light and here I explain ways to use it to your advantage

During the workshop you’ll
  • observe and analyse light before taking a photograph
  • practice seeing contrast, direction, and colour in real situations
  • shoot guided exercises focused on light, not subjects
  • review images together and talk through decisions
  • learn how to approach unfamiliar scenes with a clear visual intention
After the workshop

You should feel more confident recognising good light, making deliberate choices, and understanding why you take a photograph — not just how.

Workshop flow (4.5 hours)

16:00 – 16:20 | Introduction & reading light

  • Theory discussion “How to see light before taking a photograph”

16:20 – 18:00 | Daylight & dusk shooting

  • Working with light during golden hour and using long shadows as a part of composition
  • Simplifying scenes to let light lead the image (this time we focus on the light only)
  • Guided shooting exercises focusing on composition and how light affects it.

(approx. 1 hour 50 minutes of natural light)

18:00 – 20:00 | Controlled artificial light

  • Using my lights to practice the ways light affects scenery in a controlled environment
  • Balancing artificial and ambient light
  • Separating subject from background with artificial light

(approx. 2 hours with artificial lights)

20:00 – 20:30 | Wrap-up & discussion

  • Reviewing images and decisions
  • Q&A and next steps
  • How to keep working with light on your own

Storytelling & Photo Series

Every series tells a story. Every frame has a purpose.

Duration: approx. 4 hours

Black and white storytelling portrait of a bride

Workshop focus

This workshop is about creating meaningful photo series, that convey a story or an idea, mood or feeling.
We’ll explore how to plan sequences, use different frame sizes, and craft transition frames that guide the viewer through a story.
You’ll learn how to create images with intent, how to shift mood across a series, and how to make your work feel cinematic and cohesive.

We will talk on the topic of storytelling through multiple shots and work on a habit of inputting meaning into your single photos and series.

During the workshop you’ll

  • analyse existing photo series to understand visual flow and rhythm
  • plan and shoot sequences with transitions, shifts of mood, and varied frame sizes
  • practice making each photo intentional, with meaning behind it
  • experiment with cinematic techniques: pacing, conceptual contrast and use of colour as a way of storytelling
  • review series together, discussing narrative choices and emotional impact

After the workshop

You’ll understand how to make every frame count and how series can be more powerful than single photos. You will likely become more strict when selecting your photos. You will look at photo walks as separate projects

What students say

I have attended several courses within the years, but Fedor’s teaching technique is unique. He is explaining the subject of the day in detailed way as well as he is practicing with us, hence it is possible to discover his perspective. Secondly, he is so open to learn and teach during the course. I am happy to be a part of his photoshooting meetings in Vienna.

I’ve been attending to the courses for almost five months now, and in this time, and under his good influence, I could connect with creative photography as a hobby. Fedor is able to quickly share his passion with you, inspiring and challenging all attendees. Always creative and firmly oriented into community development, sharing tons of tips and seeding new ideas all the time. I can’t stop recommending.

Fedor is super easy to talk to and always offers tips and advice that really improved my photography skills. His enthusiasm is contagious, and he explains things in a way that’s easy to understand, no matter your skill level.

I started to pick up photography as a hobby last year. Since I joined the courses, my techniques and the way I see things have improved a lot. I particularly like the creative prompts and Fedor gives much thought in new creative ideas and shares tipps. Highly recommend.
