Camera settings info on a photograph with flying birds

Why camera settings aren’t important? Why do people share it?

Camera settings aren’t important because your camera is a tool and camera settings info won’t give much information to the viewer. To take good photos you need to master composition and light, then you will be able to take good pictures even in auto mode.

To set the right exposure you need to learn how to use a camera practically. After that, you will be able to quickly adjust the shutter speed and aperture. Knowing what settings another photographer used won’t help much unless it’s a certain technique.

Knowing camera settings can be necessary when you shoot using certain techniques like:

example of a picture where you need camera settings info
For example, 6 years ago I was shooting stars and I learned that you need to have up to 22 seconds of shutter speed and not more. Otherwise, the stars get blurred, and then it’s better to use a lot longer shutter speeds. For example 20-35 minutes
Camera settings for long exposure to shoot stars
~10 minutes long exposure shot. A bit not enough to create long and beautiful light tracks

It might be handy to know the camera settings info to create an effect like this. I wrote about this in one of the previous posts: Capture Motion in Photography. Great technique for fine-art photos.

Why do people share camera settings info?

But let’s return to the topic. This is rather a question than a post describing something.

I have been checking some Facebook groups, (to be honest, I almost never used Facebook) and I have seen that it’s even a requirement in some groups to include camera settings info. Really. When you post an image there you should write this useless information. Although I have never seen professionals sharing camera settings info, on Facebook groups people do that. I can (hardy but I can) understand when people share the model of the camera and lens. Although I have seen awful pictures shot on cameras 2 times more expensive than mine and vice versa good pictures on bad cameras.

When you masterly use exposure, it won’t be showing much information

When you have a certain idea you can capture anything in very different ways. You can turn day into night and night into day, using certain settings in your camera. That’s why the settings of your camera won’t give much information.

Who are the people who share that?

So why can’t these people simply show their photos? What do these people do with this info? It’s a strange phenomenon, a whole society of people shares information that won’t make almost any difference. For example, if you see camera settings under my pictures in this post, what does it give you? Does it help you in any way?

This is indeed a mystery but somehow I feel like these people just want to be perceived as experts not being experts themselves. Some of the people who share this info are probably beginners who want to understand what settings to use. But I don’t think that this info is helpful

This information would be too basic and useless for anyone who is doing photography actively for a long time. Any experienced photographer can set the needed settings in any lighting conditions.

What do you think about that?
